A RAND Corporation study shows lower crime rates rise in neighborhoods where dispensaries are forced to close.

When medical marijuana dispensaries close, crime rises in the surrounding neighborhood when compared to areas where dispensaries are allowed to remain open, according to a new RAND Corporation study. The findings challenge the common wisdom that marijuana dispensaries promote criminal activity.

Studying crime both before and after a large number of dispensaries were shut down in Los Angeles, researchers found that incidents such as break-ins rose in the neighborhoods of closed dispensaries relative to dispensaries allowed to remain open, at least in the short term.

In the blocks with the closed dispensaries, the study observed crime up to 60 percent greater than comparable blocks with open dispensaries, but the effects were not apparent across a wider area.

“If medical marijuana dispensaries are causing crime, then there should be a drop in crime when they close,” said Mireille Jacobson, the study’s lead author and a senior economist at RAND, a nonprofit research organization. “Individual dispensaries may attract crime or create a neighborhood nuisance, but we found no evidence that medical marijuana dispensaries in general cause crime to rise.”

Researchers say the crime detected near closed dispensaries relative to open dispensaries may be caused by factors such as a loss of foot traffic, a resurgence in outdoor drug activity, a change in police efforts such as fewer nearby patrols or a loss of the on-site security provided by dispensaries.

Sixteen states and the District of Columbia have laws allowing medical use of marijuana and at least a half dozen states are debating whether to approve such use as well. The proliferation of medical marijuana dispensaries in places like Los Angeles and Denver has created concerns among police and neighborhood activists that the outlets attract crime and create a public nuisance

However, the claim that marijuana dispensaries are linked to crime has not been rigorously evaluated and the RAND study is the first systematic analysis of the link between medical marijuana dispensaries and crime.

RAND researchers examined crime reports for the 10 days prior to and the 10 days following June 7, 2010, when the city of Los Angeles ordered more than 70 percent of the city’s 638 medical marijuana dispensaries to close. One of the principal reasons behind the city’s effort was to limit dispensaries because of the presumed connection to crime. Researchers limited their analysis to 10 days because court challenges prompted some closed dispensaries to reopen.

In addition to examining crime around closed dispensaries, researchers also collected details about crime during the same period near dispensaries that did not close and dispensaries in surrounding communities such as West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.

The information allowed researchers to analyze crime reports within a few blocks around dispensaries that closed and compare that information to crime reports for neighborhoods where dispensaries remained open. In total, researchers examined 21 days of crime reports for 600 dispensaries in Los Angeles County—170 dispensaries remained open while 430 were ordered to close.

The ongoing analysis found that crimes reported near closed dispensaries remained relatively flat while reports of crime near the remaining dispensaries decreased, suggesting a relative increase in crime around closed dispensaries.

The study found about 60 percent more reports of crime within three blocks of a closed dispensary relative to the same distance around an open dispensary. The effect diminished with distance: within six blocks of a closed dispensary crime increased by 25 percent and by 10 blocks there was no perceptible change in crime.

Researchers say the effects are concentrated on crimes such as break-ins that may be particularly sensitive to the presence of security. Reports of breaking and entering climbed by about 50 percent within three blocks of closed dispensaries relative to the change around open dispensaries.

Researchers say their findings should be interpreted cautiously, given that they studied a relatively short period of time and that the margin of error was high. But the study may help inform decisions being made by local and state officials about how to regulate medical marijuana dispensaries.

An interesting new study of the California medical cannabis user population by Prof. Craig Reinarman et al. appears in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs 43(2) Apr-Jun, 2011: “Who Are Medical Marijuana Patients? Population Characteristics from Nine California Assessment Clinics”.

Noteworthy findings:

*Medical cannabis use is higher than average among Blacks and Native Americans, lower among Latinos and Asians.

*73% of patients are male.

*Use is heaviest in the 25-44 year age group.

*Leading indications:

82.6% for pain

70.7% to improve sleep

55% for “relaxation”

41% for muscle spasms

41% for headaches

38% for anxiety

28% for nausea

26% for depression

51% use as a substitute for prescription medication (showing that medical cannabis may offer significant health cost savings)

Medical cannabis users report significantly lower alcohol & cocaine use than the average population,  supporting the substitution theory that more cannabis use may lead to less abuse of other drugs.

With so many co-ops located within socal’s borders medical marijuana is easier to find then star bucks, del taco or  just possibly your own house.  Being a medical marijuana patient means you can  and  you should learn the smells, looks,, taste, lineage (mother father plant names) and genetics of each strain. Those things don’t really change, once you know em, you just know em. Like knowing that the strain headband is a mix of master kush x sour diesel x og kush. You’ll never have anyone try selling you the wrong strain or an inferior grow of that particular strain ever again.

I never order off menu’s inside a co-op. Names mean nothing unless i’ve seen, smelled and touched the bud. I can’t begin to tell you how many time’s i see people walk in and just order off the menu without looking through every jar in the co-op! how do you know what’s good unless you dive right in and , make the bud tender work a lil, don’t feel bad… it’s your health and happiness in the end.

Marijuana comes in two main genetic types; Indica and Sativa. It’s easy to remember because 100% indica works on your body leaving it very relaxed and at ease, couchlocked is the term used when not wanting to move and feeling warm body waves. Sativa is the oposite for the most part. It mainly works on your head leaving you feeling super stoned, mentally euphoric and focused on things you normally wouldn’t care about. There are also Hybrids, which are indica and sativa crosses. The percentage of indica to sativa in the mix can be manipulated by the grower.

Lineage is also something to take note of, lineage is what the strain is it’s parents. It’s good to know because potency is passed down from parents to children plants. Say for instance a grower takes pollen from a male plant of the strain northern lights, lets say he sprinkled that pollen on a white widow female plant, the pollinated white widow will now grow seeds and they will be half white widow, half northern lights. Making the strain “white lights or “northern widow” Now you see how the names come about and how it’s usually pretty simple to trace back the lineage once you know the main strains out there..

THE REVIEW:

First smell of the jar and it’s nothing but earthiness, mints and a ton of sweet skunks. Oh baby I’m in love!

Under a pure white light it’s looking like it’s sprayed with sugar up the inside. All i see is white, amber and light green. It’s like artwork!

The taste is even better than the smell, holy cow! It’s like eating roses and skunks with a mint to wash it all down.

Its a bit leafy almost like greenhouse or too many plants not enough lights but, that doesn’t even matter when it’s this potent, smelly and tasty. honestly!

From the looks of it this part of that leafiness is most likely attributed to the fact this is a very sativa dominant og strain. It was in the indica section but when it’s this wispy and elongated and the dome heads are this perfect; it screams sativa dominant. I mean og kush is sativa dominant by nature. So go figure!

One hit of this will put you to the moon, it’s got an extremely heavy head high, i’d classify this at about 70% sativa and 30%indica. my eyes burn, i’m seeing trails and i have a super feeling of well being. it’s all evened out by a mellow body high from the indica.

I highly recommend this to any patient seeking a tasty and potent og strain. From one pot snob to the next!!! much love!
